Our story
HI, we are Richard & Julie Evans.
Richard comes from a farming background having been brought up on various sheep & beef farms in the Taupo, Rotorua & North Waikato districts. His love of plants is inter generational having learnt from his grandparents & parents.
Our interest in growing native plants stemmed from experiencing the positive effects of fencing off waterways, wetlands & unproductive areas of his home farm in the North Waikato.
After seeing the benefits to the environment & bird life we were able to identify that there was a need for farmers, lifestyler's & anyone interested in natives to have much easier access to well grown natives.
With help from our young son Damian we collect our plants from seed and also small plugs that has been sourced from the surrounding regions.
Our aim is to grow the range so we can offer a diverse selection of native plants & hope to inspire all that come to visit.
Our Nursery
In Spring of 2021 we began to establish the beginnings of Windy Ridge Nursery. First of all we engaged a local fencing contractor to construct a wind break for protection of our young plants. Secondly we begun the arduous task of laying weed matting so that plants had somewhere to sit. Then we set up our irrigation system - after a lot of trial and errors we finally got there.
We have a close relationship with a local seed propagator who then sends us small plants (known as plugs) which are then potted up into trays or pots which will then be sold in Autumn through to spring the following year.
